Why Hitting $100K Months Left Me Empty and What I Discovered Instead

Have you ever stopped and asked yourself, “Why do I actually want more money?” Sure, there’s the usual list, security, freedom, comfort, but do those reasons truly resonate with you personally, or have they been borrowed from someone else’s script? The truth is, many of us chase financial milestones that society, family, or our peers say are essential, only to reach them and realize we’re left feeling surprisingly empty or even more anxious. Here’s the hard truth: Your financial goals might not actually be your own.

Today, let’s hit pause and ask ourselves a better question: What does wealth genuinely mean to you? Because until we clarify this for ourselves, we might keep chasing someone else’s definition of success and missing out on what we truly desire.

My Personal Awakening

I remember sitting with my business partner, looking at our numbers. We saw what we had done, and where we were going. The trajectory was thrilling. Our gym was doing over $30k a month. Our online business was doing over $30k a month. Everything was profiting. And we knew we were only scratching the surface. The online business was far from optimized regarding our funnel performance. And the following we were growing on YouTube, podcasting, and our email list was moving at a pace that had our mentors cheering for us. There was a clear path to $100k months.

We knew it was going to happen. So we made a plan on how we would celebrate when we hit the mark: a trip to Vegas with the team, cabanas at pool parties, extravagant hotel rooms, you get the idea.

We didn’t make it past the party plan though. Not because we didn’t hit $100k. We blew right past it. There was no celebration. Because as soon as we hit the number, it was just another day. The celebration was mentioned, but we bumped it back and changed the plan. No more Vegas. We’re pretty busy now with more business. And we told ourselves we were having fun and didn’t need to blow money to celebrate. We should reinvest into the business.

And you know what? We didn’t tell anyone we hit the number either. I was afraid that people would either judge me for pride, or they’d judge me because it wasn’t a big deal. I spent most of my life that way. Hitting accomplishments then acting like it wasn’t a big deal. I carried the “of course” energy. I didn’t really have it, it was just an act.

But the reality was, I didn’t feel any different when I hit the numbers. It didn’t matter if it was $10k, $100k, or 2 million. The excitement lasted seconds before I had my eyes on the next goal. In fact, before I even crossed the line, I was setting up the next.

I didn’t put much thought into why I didn’t celebrate or didn’t feel like it at the time. I just told myself I was meant to do much more so there was no reason to make a big deal of it.

It wasn’t until I had made progress as a coach in the mindset space that I could see it in other people. I remember one of my business partners, AJ Roberts, setting the world record for the heaviest squat at 1205 lbs. Yes, you heard me right. He celebrated for 5 minutes and then found dissatisfaction.

I won’t speak for him, he can tell you himself, but what I saw was that the goal that was set wasn’t even his to start with. He was looking for validation, but that validation could only be momentary. Because the only lasting validation that exists happens when we learn to appreciate ourselves instead of relying on anyone else for it.

It was then I could see it in myself. None of my financial goals were mine. There were mentors I looked up to that I wanted to impress. I wanted to come back to them and let them know I did the thing they taught me to do. That I was a good student.

The mentor I respected the most didn’t seem to care. I was met with questions about “what’s next?”

Within a year of having this realization, I started to see that my personal self-worth was directly tied to my bank account. I was terrified to let anyone see my bank balances or spreadsheets. I could talk about how much my company was making but was embarrassed about everything else. So I started my journey. I learned to let go of external validation and embrace myself with love and self-appreciation. Once I did that, the financial goals lost their grip.

The first year I stopped setting hard goals or even talking about how much I made was the most profitable year of my life, and I didn’t need to tell anyone about it. I was satisfied, peaceful, and happy no matter what was happening financially.

That was what I was looking for when I talked about financial freedom, but didn’t know it.

I stopped using the term ‘financial freedom’ because it carries so much baggage and varied external definitions. It’s become a popular catchphrase with too many external influences shaping what it means. Instead, I began embracing ‘sovereignty.’ Sovereignty offers us a unique opportunity to create a new reality, redefining our financial experience from an authentic internal perspective. With sovereignty, we’re not simply chasing external goals, rather, we’re cultivating an inner state of true peace, security, and abundance that naturally aligns our external world to reflect the deeper truth of our desired reality.

Practical Steps to Cultivate Sovereign Wealth

Understanding and embracing sovereignty is transformative, yet it also requires practical integration. Here are steps you can take right now:

Mindful Reflection: Regularly take moments to observe your thoughts and feelings about money. Notice them without judgment. Awareness alone starts shifting your relationship with wealth.

Embodied Gratitude: Daily, intentionally reflect on experiences or moments where you felt abundant, peaceful, and secure, independent of external circumstances. Gratitude solidifies your inner state of sovereignty.

Releasing Attachment: Notice your attachments to external financial outcomes. Gently remind yourself that true sovereignty isn’t dependent on external validation or results. Practice letting go of the expectation that your outer world must immediately reflect inner changes.

Accelerating Your Journey

While practicing these steps will profoundly shift your perspective and experience, there’s a deeper level of work possible when you have personalized support. Navigating subconscious beliefs and attachments can be challenging alone. Working closely with someone who understands these deeper patterns can significantly accelerate your transformation toward sovereign wealth.
